JavaScript

JavaScript is an object-oriented computer programming language commonly used in web development. Alongside HTML and CSS, JavaScript is one of the three core technologies of World Wide Web content engineering.

What is JavaScript?

JavaScript, is along with HTML and CSS, one of the three core technologies of web. Today, the language dominates client-side web development. And while it can be easily confused with Java in some respects, JavaScript and Java are very differently designed.

With the wide adoption of JavaScript on the web, as well as Node.js on the server-side, the language is more-or less universal as it is now. However, many argue that it should mainly be used on the web, but more on that below.

JavaScript is mainly used to make websites interactive, as well as create online programs. But, JavaScript engines now work in many non-web programs as well (such as mobile and desktop applications).

Most developers need to have, at least some, familiarity with JavaScript. Therefore, you generally won’t have much trouble finding JavaScript developers.

However, as with everything, you have to separate the wheat from the chaff. Plentiful of JavaScript developers isn’t the same as plentiful of skilled JavaScript developers.

Why Should You use JavaScript?

As mentioned above, JavaScript is mainly a client-side language. What this means, is that the language is coded into an HTML page (and the script is later interpreted by the browser). In that regard, JavaScript is easy to implement since it’s built into the browser itself.

The language dominates in web development, simply because it’s the native language of the web browser. But when you move away from web-based environments, JavaScript gets competition. For desktop, Android, iOS or even Internet of Things?

Not really. In those environments, JavaScript mostly doesn’t stand a chance. While it can be used for desktop applications, for example, there are often other languages more appropriate.

So if you’re in need of web development, focus on JavaScript. Anything else? Probably look elsewhere.

Pros of JavaScript?

So what are the main benefits of JavaScript? Well, first and foremost — it’s quite simple to learn and implement. And being a versatile language, it integrates easily with other languages like Perl or PHP.

Another good thing about JavaScript is that it’s quite fast. This is because it’s client-side and it doesn’t have to contact a server, but can operate directly in the end-user’s environment. Naturally, this also helps reduce the load on the server.

Cons of JavaScript?

Many argue that JavaScript is a fundamentally flawed language a multitude of ways. It works well for web development, but should be used with caution elsewhere.

Some main disadvantages of using JavaScript include lacking security as well as unreliable rendering. The code itself executes on the user’s computer, meaning it could be used for less-than-honorable purposes. So in some cases, JavaScript can be a mode of attack.

As for rendering, unlike server-side scripts that will always ensure the same results, JavaScript is less reliable.  It again comes back to the fact that it relies on the end-user. Different browsers may interpret different code snippets in different ways, meaning it can be somewhat unpredictable at times.

This shouldn’t be overplayed, however. If you’re testing your script in the major browsers, you should be fine.
