Hiring a WooCommerce Developer: What You Need to Know

Your store is special. It’s not some run-of-the-mill e-commerce concoction. We understand.

But trust us: you may want your products to be sold inside a WooCommerce store like 24 percent of e-retailers do.

There are a number of factors to consider when you’re setting up a new business, but WooCommerce takes care of a lot of that thinking for you.

What Is WooCommerce?

WooCommerce is the ecommerce platform of choice for nearly a fifth of the retailers online.

It’s a free, open-source WordPress extension that allows you to turn the blog service in to a web store.

Why Use WooCommerce?

First, the entire service is available at no cost.

There are some optional add-ons that you’ll have to pay for if you want more functionality out of WooCommerce, but the product itself is free.

Second, it’s got a big team.

The WooCommerce community boasts around 280 contributors updating and tweaking the code actively. Because it’s an open source product, they can do that. And, if you’re a coder, so can you .

Third, it’s incredibly easy to use.

If you already have WordPress, it’s simply a matter of installing and activating the extension. And Viola! You have a store.

Cons? The platform is easy enough to use if you stay within the basic functionality, but if you want to do something special — say integrate a favorite software or have a store theme that looks like none other — you need to be or hire a developer.

Examples of WooCommerce and Where It’s Used

WooCommerce stores set themselves apart for not only their ease of use but also their elegant design.

Blue Star Coffee Roasteries WooCommerce Website

Small batch coffee producer, Blue Star Coffee Roasters opted for a WooCommerce platform when they wanted to bring their coffee to the world. The store matches the landing page’s welcoming, homey feel (just like a coffee shop).

Wakami WooCommerce Website

Another great example is Guatemala-based online fashion company, Wakami. They use WooCommerce to manage their online shop and to sell a variety of handmade accessories to visitors.

How Do I Start?

There’s a few things to keep in mind before you make the first move to e-commerce domination.

First, you need to be running WordPress on a self-hosted site, preferably one with e-commerce-specific necessities like an SSL certificate to keep your store protected.

*Note- If you’d like to integrate WooCommerce into your WordPress site, you will only want to use WordPress.org NOT WordPress.com.

WordPress.org is an open-source content management system largely hailed as the most powerful blogging and website management system available today. If you’d like to know more head over to our WordPress primer to get yourself educated.

If you’re just starting out, there are several user-friendly services like Bluehost and SiteGround that offer WordPress-WooCommerce hosting bundles to get you selling quickly.

I Have WordPress setup, Now What?

Head over to WooCommerce.com and download the WooCommerce plugin. Beware that the plugin runs inside of whatever WordPress theme you’ve chosen, and the WooCommerce authors note that some themes work better than others.

Once you’re all set, go Dashboard > Plugins > Add New > Search Plugins and search for “WooCommerce,” install and activate. Now you’re ready to sell!

What Else Can WooCommerce Do Besides Sell Products?

The question is, what can’t WooCommerce do?

Through this small e-commerce platform, you can book appointments for services, you can take membership fees for access to your exclusive content and you can collect subscriptions. You can also sell digital products like e-books as well as physical ones.

How Can My Customers Pay Me?

A credit or debit card will both work on WooCommerce. Using PayPal Powered by Braintree, credit card payments are ready through a plugin in WordPress. Just search for the plug through the WordPress admin dashboard, activate and (provided you have a Braintree account that’s accepted your WooCommerce account) you’ll be ready to go.

What If My Customers Want to Pay with a Cryptocurrency?

WooCommerce can even do that. Through the Stripe payment tool, you can accept payments of Bitcoin and even Apple Pay. The Stripe extension will turn up in a search of WordPress extensions.

Does WooCommerce Support Refunds?

Though you’ve got the customer’s best interests at heart, we understand that sometimes mistakes happen and you may need to issue a refund. Stripe and PayPal can both complete this feature. WooCommerce also has this feature available in its own system.

Simple Products vs. Variable Products

WooCommerce allows you to sell a bevy of products, both those physical and digital.

For physical products, WooCommerce allows you to list products with all the necessary descriptions like price and description. It also allows you to list what it calls “variable products,” listings that involve multiples of similar products. Say you’re selling a t-shirt with several colors to choose from; that’s a “variable” in your listing that WooCommerce can accomodate for you.

What to Look for in WooCommerce Developers?

You can set up WooCommerce yourself but as with most web platforms, you’ll get the most out of your experience — and so will your customers — with a developer on hand.

Look for developers strong in WordPress and search engine optimization (SEO), because you want your store to both work well and also draw traffic.

Ideally, you’d want people with demonstrated projects, something you can review that shows they can make a WooCommerce theme, custom plugins and integrate a third party app or software that you’re already using.

Why Do I Need a WooCommerce developer?

Take the payment gateways for example. WooCommerce’s payment infrastructure is pretty complete, but what if you wanted to accept payments in cryptocurrency? Bitcoin is supported already, but let’s say you want to accept payment in Litecoin or Ethereum. A developer would be able to help your store get started taking those payments.

In another example, let’s look at Google Analytics, a great tool that ought to be part of your arsenal as a merchant. A WooCommerce developer would be able to tailor an interface that shows you what data is most relevant to you from Google Analytics so you have a seamless dashboard from which to operate.

Also, WooCommerce comes with its own themes, right? Let’s say you wanted to build your own theme. A developer would be able to help you get started.

The reason why you may consider building your own theme is because some of the themes available have more or less SEO functionality. Same with the plugins. You may hit a winning combination on your web interface to get you a high page ranking when someone searches for what you’re selling. But on the other hand, you may not.

An in-house developer who knows what you’re building and understands your business will be able to properly optimise the content you have and bring everything into a nice, neat, search engine-friendly structure.

How to Find the Right WooCommerce Developer

Look for a developer who has either WordPress or WooCommerce listed as a platform they’ve worked with before.

During the initial contact, ask them what the three basic classes of code are as a first test. They are:

  • Actions — a tool a developer would use to denote events (activation, cancellation, expiration of subscriptions for example).
  • Filters — these are modifiers of existing data, which would be used to for example change the font of a “Sign Up Now” button.
  • Functions — this is the tool a developer would use these to create events like activate a subscription or end a trial.

Punch “WooCommerce Developers” in to your search engine of choice and you’ll get a listing of candidates who’ve listed their availability on UpWork or similar job boards.

These listings are complete with the essential information: price, location, expertise, etc. but what you’re missing is “trust.”

That’s where we come in.

Pangara’s service provides you with everything from the developer to the payment infrastructure to guidance during the vetting process and more. Pangara is an end-to-end service from individual needs to tailored products. Each comes with a money-back guarantee, but we’re sure you won’t need to exercise it.
